“Quote for this artwork?”

Emojigrams
Emijograms, one of which is presented here, looks critically at how digital and social media color and complicate our understanding of history. Painted with gouache and watercolor pencil in the familiar text field bubble colors of gray, blue and green, the work examines famous quotes from both historic figures and popular culture personalities. Emoji like figures and symbols are used to graphically illustrate each of the quotes. The work catalogs and considers our culture’s historic record on social justice from the late antebellum period to the pre-digital nineteen-nineties.
The titles give the date and the name of each person who is quoted. The reference to text field bubbles lure viewers to reach for their phones to help them decode and clarify the text and possibly provoke them to inquire further about not just the meaning but the historical context of the quotes as well.
